New intern in the project »Migrants as youth work professionals«
From 1. March to 18. May 2024, Ekoto Edjoa Stephanie Emmanuelle will be completing an internship in our project. Before starting the internship, she completed a Master’s degree in Law and Political Science, specialising in Public Law, International Humanitarian Law, Human Rights and Political Processes at the University of Yaoundé, Cameroon. In addition, Stephanie had already completed an internship at the German Association for International Cooperation in Jaude, Cameroon and worked as an educational assistant at the College la baieté in Bastos, Cameroon.
The young woman from Cameroon is looking forward to her time in Weimar. »The EJBW is a renowned organisation that enables me to grow professionally and acquire new skills. For example, I want to learn more about political education. It’s also the perfect opportunity to improve my language skills in German and English,« says Stephanie.

Caroline Ellenberger, a graduate of our training programme, has founded an association:
The association »Demokratie ohne Barrieren – Landesverband für gesellschaftliche Teilhabe von Menschen mit Behinderung« (Instagram: @demokratie_ohnebarrieren), was founded in January and aims to promote the social participation of people with disabilities. As a state association, it strives to network individuals and organisations that are committed to the participation of people with disabilities in Thuringia and to support their activities. The association is also planning to implement its own initiatives, with a particular focus on promoting social participation through cultural projects in the first year.
Caroline Ellenberger is also a member of the association’s board.
How can you join?
The association is open to all people who want to support the participation of people with disabilities, regardless of their own disability. Participation in the further education series »Democracy education from an early age« of the Bavarian State Centre for Political Education (BLZ)
In recent years, individual participants in the qualification programme have repeatedly shown an interest in political education with children. Dorit Machell and speaker Anna Oberhauser have therefore also offered sessions for this target group in the further education modules of the qualification programme.
For example, the »Value Travel Kit« has already been presented and individual workshops can also be booked for children from the age of 6. Dorit Machell from the project team is currently taking part in further training courses in the »Democracy education from an early age« series of events organised by the Bavarian State Centre for Political Education (BLZ) in order to engage in an even deeper exchange with other specialists (also from school education) and to gain input on political education practice with children. The topics are as follows:
- Talking with children about racism
- Talking with children about values
- Talking to children about sustainability
- Talking to children about Europe
- Talking to children about AI
- Holding elections with children

Module 8 »Postcolonialities«
Module 8 of the Qualifications Programme introduced the participants to the concept of Postcolonialities. The module which took place on the 17th and 18th of February 2024 provided participants with knowledge on the topics of of colonialism, post-colonialism, neo-colonialism and decoloniality. Participants also learnt more about racism and its different forms, which also has its roots in colonialism.
The programme kicked off on Saturday 17th February with Denise Lee introducing the concepts of Colonialism and Racism by sharing her knowledge on the global history of colonization through different timelines on different continents. Julie Onyango then continued by delving into the history of the three colonial powers; Britain, France and Germany and how they interacted with their colonies.
The trainers distributed video and text resources among the participants to analyze and present their findings on the various ways the three colonial empires interacted with their colonies. Yanda Bongo then shared the colonizing tactics used by the colonial powers using South Africa as the case study. Participants learned of tactics like divide and conquer and the apartheid system.On Sunday 18th February, Denise Lee and Yanda Bongo guided the participants to do media analysis using images from movies and magazines and to discuss their connection with postcoloniality. As part of the final session, Yanda shared some statistics about the EU policies against racism. The effectiveness of the EU Anti-Racism action plan was also discussed among the participants.

Juliana supports us as a new intern
Our project team has active support since February: Juliana Odamea Asare will complete a six-month internship at the EJBW.
Before stepping into her role as an intern at EJBW, Juliana made impactful strides in her career. Hailing from Ghana, she contributed her expertise to the Ministry of Communications and Digitalization. Passionate about social causes, she also lent her skills to Food Salvage Ghana, an NGO dedicated to combating food insecurity.
Juliana’s journey extends beyond her internship at EJBW. She is currently immersed in her Master’s program in Global Communication: Politics and Society at the University of Erfurt. Simultaneously, she actively participates in the EJBW qualification program on Human Rights Education-Career Entry into Civic Education & Youth Work, showcasing her commitment to continuous learning and personal development.
Within the realm of EJBW, Juliana plays a pivotal role in organizing events and workshops. Her responsibilities extend to meticulous documentation and providing crucial support to project managers in the seamless execution of various initiatives. »I believe EJBW is a place where I can build my skills, make meaningful connections, and contribute to my future aspirations. The projects here align with my long-term goals, reflecting my vision for a career in civic education. Joining EJBW is not just a step in my journey; it’s a commitment to fostering positive change and building bridges of understanding in our society.«, she said. We are very grateful to her for her practical approach and commitment!
